Introducing
Your New Doberman to Other Dogs
- Introduce the Dobe to your other dogs at a neutral
location, like your front yard or a park lot.
- Put all dogs on a leash and let them get to know each
other outside of your dog's territory.
- Try walking the dogs around the block together, and only after
they are getting along, let them into the house or fenced yard
together.
- If you have more then one dog, introduce them to your new Dobe
one at a time. Do not let your dogs "gang-up" on the new
one.
Other
Tips & Tricks
It takes several weeks for a new dog to settle into a new home.
It's not unusual for some to have stress related "acting out"
incidents. This can include submissive peeing, barking, hair
standing or growling at other dogs. Most of these behaviors
can be easily corrected or stop as the dog becomes more comfortable
in its new home. Putting your new dog on a fixed routine will
help them settle in faster. Dogs enjoy a routine.
- Always start out feeding the dogs in separate locations. Dogs
are particularly possessive of food.
- Pick up toys when first introducing the dogs to avoid possible
confrontation over toys. Supervise both dogs with toys until
you are comfortable.
- Crate or isolate your new Dobe at night and when alone for several
days. Crating allows for some "time-out" for the dog, giving
it a chance to let its guard down and sleep without concern. Crating
also prevents property damage. Your new dog
will be stressed at first and may act out by chewing, digging
or engaging in other negative behavior.
- Give your new Dobe something constructive to do when alone.
A "dino" bone stuffed with cheese, peanut butter or meat is a
great choice.
- Take your Dobe on walks; keep them exercised. A tired Dobe
is a good Dobe.
- Keep an ID tag on your dog and provide good supervision when
outside. Your new Dobe does not know where they live or
who you are yet and can easily become lost.
- Obedience train your dog. It develops a better bond and
understanding between you and your Dobe.
